President of the Republic of Belarus, Chairman of the Belarusian People's Congress Aleksandr Lukashenko presided over a meeting of the Presidium of the Belarusian People's Congress
The first meeting of the Presidium took place at the Palace of Independence on 19 November 2024.
At the start of the meeting, the head of state outlined key priorities in the work of the new supreme representative body of people's power. He noted that the Belarusian People's Congress should not interfere with other government bodies, should not prevail over other government bodies, but should deal exclusively with matters prescribed in the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus. “This principle should underpin the structure of the Congress and relations between the Presidium, the Chairman of the Presidium and the delegates of the Belarusian People's Congress,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The Presidium discussed the terms of interaction with the delegates in the intersession period, plans to upgrade the status of the chairpersons of the district executive committees in order to give them more powers (the participants of the meeting discussed the relevant draft decree of the head of state), and also the issue related to the number of judges in the Supreme Court.
The thorough discussion resulted in the relevant decisions on the major items on the agenda.
The participants concluded that new powers for local authorities should be formalized in a single legislative act. In their work they should focus on preventing workforce outflow and promoting employment. The Presidium also decided to reduce the number of Supreme Court judges from 76 to 71. The head of the Supreme Court explained that this is due to the establishment of the Economic Court of Appeal, staffed by judges who already work within this system.
